Target Upset With Frank Ocean “Channel Orange” Early Album Release

Target must feel some type of way about Frank Ocean releasing his album Channel Orange early via iTunes, because they’ve decided not to carry the album in their stores.  The excuse isn’t because he’s gay, but instead because his album dropped too early.  Here’s what Target had to say in a statement,

"At Target, we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, so our selection of new releases is dedicated to physical CDs rather than titles that are realized digitally in advance of the street date," said a Target spokesperson. "Our assortment decisions are based on a number of factors, including guest demand. Target has a longstanding tradition of supporting music and artistry that reflects the diverse landscape of American culture."

Frank Ocean took to his Twitter account to relay the news to his fans.  Obviously, he’s disappointed that Target won’t carry his title, but he let’s it be known that Best Buy will hold him down!

It all comes down to Target not having faith that Frank Ocean will sell or move enough units for the business to profit.  By releasing his album earlier in the digital arena it lessens the impact of physical sells.  Therefore, Target is afraid to purchase wholesale units then unable to sell all physical CD’s and left holding the bag.
